Airport
Transfers
Kenya’s main international gateway is Jomo Kenyatta
International Airport (JKIA), located 15km south-east of the
city. The drive from the airport to Backpackers takes between
20-30 minutes. Most domestic carriers, including flights to
Arusha, are situated at Wilson Airport, approximately 6km
to the south. Transfers can be arranged to meet any arrival
or departure flight at either airport.

Mombasa
Train
Does not
sell through agents, but the following is for guest guidance.
The overnight train from Nairobi to Mombasa presently operates
3 days per week on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The train
departs Nairobi at 19.00 and arrives into Mombasa the next
day at approximately 08.30.From Mombasa to Nairobi, the times
are much the same and departs on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday.
The fare for 1st and 2nd Class includes dinner, breakfast
and bedding. The 1st Class cabin contains 2 beds only while
the 2nd Class cabin contains 4 beds.
Bookings should be made 1 or 2 days in advance.

Mombasa
Beach Hotels

of the finest beaches in Africa and the Coast is one of the
country’s main attractions. Apart from lounging beside
the warm waters of the Indian Ocean, the coastal region offers
historical sites, game-viewing opportunities, marine national
parks, and a wide variety of water-sports including some of
the best game fishing in the world. The Coast has an impressive
range of accommodation to suit every taste and budget, from
luxury hotels of international standard to local guesthouses

Nairobi
– Arusha Shuttle
There are daily shuttle services to Arusha and Moshi in Tanzania.
There are 3 main operators who utilize 20-30 seat buses with
comfortable, individual seating. They depart Nairobi each
day at 0800 and 1400, arriving in Arusha approximately 41/2
hours later.
There is a border crossing at Namanga where passengers disembark
to complete immigration formalities. Visas for Tanzania can
be obtained at the border if necessary.
Bookings can be made in advance or on the day subject to availability.

rates for Backpackers: (single journey)
Nairobi – Arusha 1400 Kenya shillings per person.
Nairobi – Moshi 1900 Kenya shillings per person.
Travellers
can also travel from Nairobi to Dar es Salaam on a
same day service via Arusha. Two companies, Akamba & Scandinavia
Express, operate on a daily basis departing Nairobi at 0700
and arriving in Dar around 2030. Cost: Approx. US$20-25

Nairobi
– Kampala Bus
There are daily bus services between Nairobi and the Ugandan
capital, Kampala. Of the number of companies operating this
route, probably the best are Akamba who operate two departures,
one during the day and an overnight service. The first service
leaves Nairobi at 0700, arriving Kampala at approx. 1800.
The overnight service departs at 2100, arriving the following
morning at 1000. Akamba also operate a “Royal Service”
on this route where the buses carry less passengers, have
slightly bigger seats, and are generally more comfortable.
The border posts normally used are Busia and Malaba where
immigration procedures are completed. Visas for most nationalities
can be obtained at the border. Passengers departing for Jinja
can also use this service.

9 years experience of working in Ethiopia, Eritrea, Djibouti, Kenya
and Uganda. Our clients have included: Film Crews, Photographers,
Journalists and Geologists. Examples of the tasks we have undertaken
are building and running bush camps, running re-supply convoys,
training personnel in off-road driving, building and running bush
workshops, plus supplying full logistic support to film crews from
the BBC and German TV.
We can undertake long or short term contracts or merely
consultancy.
